Always There For Job Seekers And Employers
Seeking employment can be challenging at the best of times without having a pandemic make looking for work even more difficult. Thankfully job seekers and businesses in Grande Prairie have an ally in a downtown company – The Work Place.
This organization, operated by Carlson & Company Inc., has provided employment consulting services to unemployed and underemployed individuals as well as employers for the past 12 years. Since COVID-19 struck, the staff have demonstrated adaptability as they’re unable to meet in-person with clients.
“We have continued to provide service to job seekers in a variety of other ways,” says Denise Carlson, owner of The Work Place. “Our staff are able to work with clients by phone, email and on a variety of video technology platforms such as Skype, Zoom and FaceTime.
“There continues to be hiring in several sectors, so it’s important that people who’re looking for jobs have the support and resources they need. We are able to provide assistance with resumes and cover letters, improving interview skills, and guidance on how to network more comfortably.”
“We have not been advised yet when we can return to in-person service,” says Carlson. “In the meantime, we are pleased to find ways to accommodate clients to help them be successful in their job search.”
The Work Place is contracted by the Provincial Government to provide employment consulting services at no cost to qualifying unemployed and underemployed individuals.
The Work Place can help with:
- Assistance to develop/fine tune job search skills: resumes, cover letters, interview skills (including digital interviewing), LinkedIn Profiles, and other forms of networking.
- Resources/assessments to identify and/or develop your work-related skills.
- Career planning.
- Website links to updated government and community information as well as online job search and career advancement resources.

Assistance For Employers
The Work Place is active in the local business community with Employment Specialist Nevin Bakir providing continuous outreach to employers to make them aware of a range of available services and get feedback on their needs.
Staff at The Work Place can post job advertisements and once COVID restrictions are lifted, use the training room to interview prospective job applicants and/or hold job fairs. In the interim, virtual job fairs can be arranged.
They also provide screening and referral of qualified job applicants for specific positions. This enables employers to fill job openings by matching a client’s skills to employer’s job specifications, and qualified applicants are referred for an interview.
